Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yolk upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yolk is easy, and my burden is light. // Matthew 11:28-30
The realization that it isn’t necessarily a physical rest Jesus is talking about here hit me like a ton of bricks this morning. Sure, I think he could be talking about that a little too… but I don’t think Jesus calls us to run ourselves ragged and all crazy tired, but he also is talking about a spiritual, life giving rest, instead of a life filled with soul crushing burdens.
We are sinners. I am a sinner. What Jesus is saying here is GIVE ALL OF THOSE SINS TO ME. And yes, we think, I’ll ask for forgiveness, then I move on, bound to just make another mistake… but I can’t miss the part where he says, “Take my yolk upon you…” HE WANTS TO WALK THE BURDEN OF SIN FOR US AND WITH US. Then, and only then, we’ll find rest. It isn’t like some power game, he isn’t trying to control us and our decisions. He’s asking us to choose him. To be a part of him, to be in him. That doesn’t mean that it makes life easier, but it just means we aren’t alone and we are living a life of submission and finding freedom in Gods truth, his commandments and his story for our lives that in turn plays into and glorifies his upper story.
Jesus – you are so good. I pray that I find rest in you, the kind of life giving rest I cannot find from anyone or anything else. Thank you for your truths and your unfailing love.
